Description
The Bonneville T120 was named after Johnny Allen’s 1956 speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, where he achieved a two-way average speed of 214.17 mph on a Triumph-powered streamliner. This event significantly boosted Triumph’s profile and led to the naming of the T120 Bonneville in honour of that achievement.
The T120 was produced from 1959-1975 and was the first in the Bonneville series. This particular example from 1969 is an original and sort after US specification model. Some of the differences between the US and UK specification models included a smaller tear-drop shaped fuel tank and taller, wider ‘buckhorn’ handlebars to accommodate a more upright riding position.
This T120 has previously won ‘Best British’ at the Guernsey classic vehicle show and was also exhibited at the Classic Car and Bike show at the NEC. Its provenance has been validated by the Triumph Owners Motor Cycle club, and it’s history also includes featuring in the Classic Bike magazine in December 1986 and January 1987 as part of a competition – original copies of both magazines accompany the bike.
Maintained to an outstanding level and a credit to its owner, it’s only been used in dry weather. As such, the silver and bronze paintwork on the tank is immaculate; the same can be said for all of the chrome work. The black leather seat with gold ‘Triumph’ on the rear shows no sign of wear. The stainless-steel spoked wheels are as new and complete the overall aesthetic.
The simplistic instrument panel features a rev counter and speedometer, with the battery amperage meter incorporated within the headlight housing.
It’s powered by a 650cc air-cooled parallel twin-cylinder engine, fed by twin Amal Monobloc carburettors. The engine and all associated ancillaries are presented equally well as the rest of the bike and demonstrate the high-level of time, attention and care which has been dedicated throughout its life.
The perfect addition of J21969 which matches the year of manafacture is included in the sale for a local Jersey buyer.
This Triumph Bonneville T120 is a stunning example of the iconic British motorcycle. Maintained to an incredible standard, it’s an award-winning showpiece which is accompanied with some unique history. It would make a fantastic addition to any motorcycle collection.
