Description

The Alvis 12/50 was introduced in 1923 and quickly gained a reputation for its advanced engineering, reliability, and spirited performance. By the time the final variant—the TJ series—was introduced in 1931, the model had evolved into a refined and well-balanced touring car.

The TJ retained the core qualities that made the 12/50 famous but incorporated modern updates such as coil ignition and a repositioned fuel tank for improved usability. The TJ 12/50 marked the end of an era for Alvis, just before the company transitioned to newer models like the Firefly and Speed 20.

Originally from the UK, this 1932 example – one of the last to roll off the production lines, arrived in Jersey in 2019.

Under the bonnet, this TJ 12/50 is powered by Alvis’s robust 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering smooth and reliable performance through its original 4-speed manual gearbox. Braking is handled by drum brakes on all four wheels—a significant advancement over earlier rear-only systems—offering confident stopping power in line with the car’s refined engineering.

The exterior bodywork is finished in traditional green and remains in excellent overall condition. The runners and wheel arches are finished in black, providing a lovely period-appropriate contrast. The upper sections of the doors and roof are covered in vinyl, as was typical of vehicles from this era. The underside of the car is equally clean and demonstrates the care and attention it has received over the years; the floors, chassis, and body are all incredibly solid.

The black wire-spoke wheels feature Alvis centre caps and are fitted with traditional Michelin tyres.

Inside, the seats—both front and rear—and the door cards are trimmed in green leather, showing a gentle age-related patina but no rips or tears. The wooden dashboard presents very well and features five dials for battery voltage, water temperature, oil pressure, speedometer, and clock. A manufacturer’s plate on the passenger side displays the chassis number: 14618.

The vendor reports the car is in good mechanical order and starts first time without issue. They note no known mechanical or electrical faults, and all dials and associated components are fully operational.

Presented in fantastic original condition and fast approaching 100 years old, this Alvis TJ 12/50 offers a wonderful opportunity to enter the vintage car world with a model that blends history, character, and usability.
