Description
In the aftermath of World War Two, Rover’s chief engineer Maurice Wilks famously used a demobilised Jeep on his farm, inspiring the creation of a British equivalent. The result was the Land Rover, launched in 1948, which quickly became a global success and a cornerstone of Rover’s survival through the 1950s. Today, these early Series I models are among the most desirable and steadily appreciating classic 4x4s.
This exceptional example benefits from outstanding provenance. Registered in the UK from new in 1955 until 2017, it has had just three recorded owners. The first owner retained the vehicle until 1960, followed by a second owner until 1964. It was then inherited by his widow, who kept the vehicle in dry storage for approximately 40 years.
Rediscovered in 2015, the Land Rover underwent a comprehensive nut-and-bolt concours restoration over a two-year period by a knowledgeable enthusiast. The restoration utilised the same specialist suppliers as Land Rover’s own ‘Reborn’ programme, with invoices exceeding £20,000.
The chassis was sandblasted, galvanised, and refinished in two-pack paint, ensuring long-term durability. The bodywork remains largely original, with only minimal replacement panels where necessary, and has been refinished to an exceptional standard in Deep Bronze Green. The underside presents just as well, reflecting the thoroughness of the restoration.
Externally, the vehicle is completed with a brand-new traditional canvas hood and correctly finished steel wheels, also in Deep Bronze Green. All four tyres are in near-new condition.
The interior is equally impressive, featuring new seats, floor mats, and fully refurbished controls, all operating as intended. A new original-specification braided wiring loom has been installed, maintaining authenticity while ensuring reliability.
Under the bonnet, the rebuilt 2.0-litre petrol engine starts readily and runs smoothly, paired with a fully reconditioned four-speed manual gearbox delivering drive to all four wheels.
The vehicle is accompanied by an extensive history file, including a leather-bound folder of invoices covering the restoration, servicing, and maintenance, as well as an original 1956 logbook.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and highly original Series I Land Rover, presented in outstanding condition and ready to be enjoyed or added to a discerning collection.
