Description
Developed from Harry Wimperis’s pioneering 1909 patent, the Wimperis accelerometer is one of the earliest practical devices used to measure longitudinal acceleration in aircraft. Instruments of this type were fitted to early civil and research aircraft and were also used in flight-test environments during the formative years of aviation.
This example, which is offered with no reserve, was manufactured by the renowned scientific instrument makers Elliott Brothers London, represents a later refined version of the early Wimperis design. It features a black dial, precision brass case, and the printed patent number “20231/09”. It also bears the original serial marking “No. 404”, indicating small-batch production typical of Elliott’s high-grade interwar instruments.
Presented in its original fitted leather box, the accelerometer remains in excellent overall condition for its age, with clean dial lettering, intact glass, and a well-preserved case. The inclusion of its period leather presentation box makes this a particularly desirable collector’s piece, appealing to enthusiasts of early flight, scientific instrumentation, and decorative industrial design.
