Description
The rigid frame AJS 16M was first developed in 1945 from the well proven and successful Matchless G3/L used during WW2. It wasn’t until 1949 that AJS decided to evolve the 16M with a swinging arm rear suspension, featuring the famous ‘jampot’ shock absorbers and denoted by the addition of an ‘S’ for Springer in the model name. It was an enhancement which was reported to be a vast improvement on the original rigid frame and perfect for the domestic market.
This highly original 1956 AJS 16MS is an excellent example of the classic British bike. Originally from the UK, it came across to Jersey in 2007 where it was part of a private collection until a change of ownership in 2021. It has since been recommissioned before undergoing a full inspection by Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS), where it passed with flying colours and is now Jersey registered.
The traditional black colour scheme is presented in very good original condition overall and features gold accents on the fuel tank and blue enamel ‘AJS’ badges. There are also ‘AJS’ embossed rubber protectors on either side of the tank.
The black leather seat which is finished with blue piping has a small hole above the right-hand side shock absorber mount, but is otherwise presented very well.
It’s powered by a 350cc single cylinder air-cooled engine which was renowned for its fuel efficiency, and although in perfect running order will be professionally checked over prior to sale. It’s covered, a believed to be original, 41,130 miles from new. The 19” chrome wire wheels are fitted with Dunlop tyres.
The simplistic instrument panel is uniquely incorporated within the headlight housing and features a larger diameter speedometer, battery amperage meter and headlight switch.
The AJS 16MS was advertised as ‘A fast, light, economical and superbly finished 350’ and you can certainly see why they were so popular post-war. This example is presented in excellent condition overall and in great mechanical order. It stands ready to be enjoyed and would make a perfect addition to any classis bike collection.
