Description

An evolution of the successful Fiat 600, the 850 was first launched in 1964. It wasn’t until the following year the desirable 850 Spider was introduced. The elegant body was designed and built by Bertone, with all Spider’s being LHD and only sold to the American market.

This example was shipped across the Atlantic to its first owner in October 1971, as noted in the original service book. It was imported into the UK in 2015 and came across to Jersey in 2016.

The exterior of this 850 is presented in excellent condition overall. The body shell and all of the body panels are solid and rust free. The striking lime green paintwork perfectly suits the spider styling and is also very well presented. It is believed the exterior has been re-sprayed some years ago and the only blemishes of note are some expected age-related oxidation; the engine bay and front boot appear largely original and in great condition.

The black canvas hood neatly stows away beneath the rear deck. The seller notes the hood has shrunk slightly from lack of use and will need some gentle stretching to work back into place. One catch will also require replacement which is provided with the car.

The 13-inch silver steel wheels have been re-sprayed during the current owner’s tenure and are finished with chrome centre cap; all four tyres retain a significant amount of tread having been recently replaced. All exterior chrome work has been re-conditioned and is in great condition.

Moving inside, the interior is in excellent condition. Both the original front seats are presented incredibly well with no signs of wear. The dashboard, dials and door cards continue this theme and are in perfect working order. The rubber carpet floor mats have been replaced throughout with new Fiat equivalents, during this process the floor-pans were closely inspected and in a sound state.

Fitted above the rear axle is an 903cc engine mounted to a 4-speed manual gearbox, delivering drive to the rear wheels. The current owner has kept a high level of maintenance resulting in the 850 starting and running perfectly; this includes a new exhaust, battery, battery cut off switch and a regular full service.

The sale includes the USA and UK papers, service book, Fiat safe driving book, various invoices, tools, jack and full cover. If sold locally in Jersey, the perfectly apt J71850 will also come with the car!

This Fiat 850 Spider is a beautifully presented, desirable and rare Italian classic. The condition of both the exterior and interior demonstrates the care, attention and investment which has been provided over the past 53 years. With a great story and history file, this would be a fantastic addition to any collection of classics.
