Description

The Ford Escort Mk1 remains one of the most iconic and successful rally cars of its era, renowned for its lightweight construction, rear-wheel-drive balance and huge aftermarket support. Decades on, it continues to be a cornerstone of historic and club-level rallying, with well-built examples highly sought after by competitors and collectors alike.

This particular example was manufactured in 1972, first registered in 1973, and has remained a Jersey car from new. It has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration and fresh build in 2024, completed with a clear focus on performance, reliability and attention to detail. Since completion, the car has covered just 250 stage miles.

At its core is a 2.0-litre JRE “Red Top” engine producing approximately 230bhp, paired with a Quaife 60G gearbox, both offering strong, reliable performance suited to competitive use. The drivetrain has been extensively refreshed, with a new AP clutch, two-piece propshaft and fully floating Atlas axle all fitted during the 2024 build.

The shell has been seam welded and strengthened, and is fitted with skid plates, reflecting its intended use. Suspension is handled by Bilstein components all round, while braking is provided by AP Racing. A Watts linkage and toe correction setup further enhance handling and stability.

It’s presented in red paintwork which remains in excellent condition, as does the bodywork overall. The underside of the car reflects the same level of care and attention seen throughout the build, presenting to a very high standard.

Inside, the car is built to a high motorsport standard, featuring a Safety Devices roll cage, hydraulic handbrake, bias pedal box and hydraulic clutch. The electrical system has been completely renewed with a custom-built loom, while engine management is handled by a DTA S40 ECU. A Geartronics digital dash is fitted alongside analogue gauges. Additional features include flatshift, electric power steering, heated windscreen and a Laminova oil cooling system.

The interior is completed with competition seats and harnesses, both newly fitted in 2024, while the fire extinguishers were serviced in 2025. The car also benefits from an MSA Category 1 logbook, supporting its competition credentials.

The sale includes a selection of spare wheels and tyres, with Hoosier compounds including wet soft, soft, medium and full wets, all reported to be in excellent condition.

This Escort Mk1 represents a fully sorted and highly capable rally car, built with significant investment and attention to detail. Ready to be used in competition or enjoyed at events, it offers an opportunity to acquire a well-prepared example without the time and expense typically associated with a build of this calibre.
