1972 Leyland 253

Winning Bid: £5,000.00

With a true British heritage, this 1972 Leyland 253 has been fully reconditioned to an excellent overall standard, including a new 2.5-litre Perkins engine it stands ready to be enjoyed. Offered with no reserve!

Description

The British Motor Corporation (BMC) was the largest British car company of its day, producing cars under brand names including Austin, Morris, MG , Austin-Healy, Riley and Wolseley; they also produced agricultural vehicles under Nuffield Tractors. Leyland tractors was created after the merger of BMC with Leyland Motors to form British Leyland in 1968. After the merger Leyland changed the colour from the poppy red of Nuffield to the two-tone blue which would eventually last up until the early 1980’s.

Having been fully reconditioned to an excellent standard, this 1972 Leyland 253 is fully capable of completing everyday farming chores, or equally taken for a fun tractor run.

It’s powered by the desirable 2.5-litre, 3-cylinder diesel Perkins engine, which was also used in the Massey Ferguson 135; coupled to this is a 10-speed (8 forward and 2 reverse) gearbox and mechanical clutch. The independent hydraulic system is also fully operational.

This 253 has been dry stored since being reconditioned and the exterior panels, which includes 2 new rear wings are all in excellent condition. Fully resprayed, it’s finished in the traditional Leyland two-tone blue.

Both the chassis and engine have been finished in dark blue, and the front and rear wheels have been painted in classic silver with blue hubs and nuts. New tyres have been fitted on the front and the rear tyres still retain a significant amount of tread. A new single driver’s seat has also been fitted inside the cab which also features a roll-up rear screen.

Mechanically, the freshly rebuilt 2.5-litre Perkins engine runs perfectly and always starts without issue. During the recommissioning, any parts that were required have been replaced including elements of the suspension. The vendor reports there are no mechanical or electrical faults, and all dials and associated elements are fully operational.

This Leyland 235 has been finished to an excellent overall standard and is a great example of classic British manufacturing. With only a handful remaining in Jersey, it’s perfect to be enjoyed on a fair autumn and winters day or saved for summer agricultural shows or displays where it will deservedly attract a lot of attention.
