Description
Built in South Africa as one of the last ever production run Fleetline series of vehicles, this is a rare, originally right hand drive, single cab Type 1 Split Screen. Under its current ownership it has undergone an extensive restoration and re-build and covered less than 500 miles since completion.
With the expertise from UK VW specialists, the body of this single cab was shot-blasted back to bare metal. Following this all the exterior panels were analysed and either repaired or replaced with VW pattern parts. The result of this time and investment is an incredibly solid, corrosion free exterior.
Once the panel work was completed, a full-respray in original VW green and white was finished to an excellent standard including the underside. Having been dry stored under its current owner’s tenure the high restored condition has been excellently maintained.
The standout feature on this single cab is the load bed. With no expense spared the load bed has been covered in the highest quality English oak. Attached from underneath and utilising professional boat decking caulk, it provides an exquisite nautical theme focal point. Finished with a hard wearing yacht varnish to maintain its colour and grain, stainless steel pop-up cleats have also been added to provide tie-down points when needed.
Moving inside, a classic period style brown leather bench seat provides ample room for 3 people. The leather is in very good condition, well sprung and shows very little signs of wear. Safety enhancements in the cab include 3-point inertia reel seatbelts fitted to strengthening plates for all passengers.
The body colour dash is presented in excellent condition to match the exterior, and both the dials and electrics are fully operational with no faults reported. Looking out from the cab through the split screen which you can also open the safari style windows to enhance the driving experience further.
The only elements that need completion within the cab are to cover the ply-wood panels with a fabric of the buyers choice, along with fitting the ashtray and grab handle which will be provided in the sale.
Mechanically, the freshly painted but original 1600cc engine was rebuilt during the restoration and runs very well. Further improvements include new brakes which are now servo-assisted, along with a new steering box and wiring loom.
The vehicle has been lowered to an understated, but practical height using custom drop spindles at the front and new swing arms at the rear which have also been modified to provide enhanced gear ratios for modern driving.
The period white steel wheels all feature chrome centre hub caps along with new tyres.
This rare Volkswagen Type 1 Single Cab has been restored, updated, and enhanced to a superb standard. Presented in excellent cosmetic, structural and mechanical condition, it stands ready to be enjoyed for day trips or weekends at the beach.
