Description

The 1970s were a great period for Suzuki and their motorcycle achievements; especially with the infamous Barry Sheene riding the RG500 to successive World Championships in 1976 and 1977. Suzuki’s track exploits were benefiting their road bike sales, and their GT series provided the opportunity for bike enthusiasts to join the journey.

This original 1977 GT 550 is a good example of the three-cylinder two-stroke. Having covered 34,241 miles, its current condition will provide the new owner with the opportunity to restore it back to as new condition if desired or equally enjoyed in its current age-related worn condition.

The black colour scheme is presented in good condition overall and features the ‘GT550’ badges on either side of the airbox.

The black leather seat is in very good condition and shows no sign of age-related wear, indicating it may have benefited from being recovered at some point during its life.

At the heart of this Suzuki is a 543cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine which runs well. Suzuki had developed a ‘ram-air’ cooling system which was fitted both to the GT550 and GT380. The concept was introduced to help prevent the loss of engine power which two-stroke engines could suffer when the engine was hot. This system consisted of a two-piece aluminium shroud bolted on to the cylinder head to help introduce ambient air over the top of the engine.

The instantly recognisable two-stroke sound is highlighted by the twin side exhaust, which was unusual at the time in its design with the centre exhaust header being split in two. The chrome-work on the exhausts and other elements on the bike could benefit from re-chroming if desired.

The instrument panel features a large diameter speedometer on the left-hand side, and rev counter on the right – separated by a gear indicator in the middle. The current owner will also fit a replacement ignition barrel prior to sale.

This Suzuki GT550 was designed to be a touring motorcycle and as it runs and rides well, it can continue to be enjoyed as it stands, or equally offers the opportunity for its owner to bring it back to as new condition.
