Description
Introduced during the 1980s, the Porsche 911 Carrera Supersport—known internally as the M491 “Turbo Look”—offered buyers the appearance, chassis and braking performance of the legendary 930 Turbo without the complexity of turbocharging. Featuring the distinctive wide-body arches, Turbo braking system, suspension upgrades, Fuchs alloy wheels and iconic rear spoiler, the Supersport has become one of the most collectible and sought-after variants of the classic air-cooled 911.
Powered by Porsche’s celebrated 3.2-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, this 1988 example benefits from the later and highly regarded G50 five-speed manual gearbox, widely praised for its improved shift quality and durability. The combination of the charismatic air-cooled flat-six, rear-wheel drive layout and G50 transmission delivers the engaging and analogue driving experience for which the classic 911 is renowned.
Originally supplied to the UK market, the car was brought to Jersey in 1997 and has been cherished by its current owner for the past 21 years. During that time, it has seen only very light use and now shows 90,860 miles from new. This marks the first time the car has been offered to the market in over two decades.
Importantly, this is an original, unrestored example that has been carefully preserved rather than comprehensively rebuilt, allowing it to retain the authenticity and character that many collectors seek. Such cars are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly in Carrera Supersport specification.
The bodywork presents very well overall and reflects the care the vehicle has received throughout its life. The paintwork retains an excellent finish, with only a handful of minor age-related imperfections with an original vehicle of this age. The car’s distinctive wide-body stance remains every bit as striking today as when it left the factory.
The iconic Fuchs alloy wheels have recently been renewed and are presented in excellent condition, complementing the Supersport’s unmistakable appearance.
Inside, the cabin remains original and well preserved. The seats, door cards, dashboard and carpets all present very well considering the car’s age and mileage, further reinforcing the originality of this example.
Mechanically, the car has recently benefited from significant expenditure in preparation for sale. A comprehensive service was completed in July 2026, during which numerous items were renewed including the fuel pump, battery, Â ball joints, exhaust gaskets, brake hose, brake pads, bonnet struts and various additional components. The result is a Porsche that has been carefully prepared for its next custodian while remaining true to its original specification.
The Porsche 911 Carrera Supersport Cabriolet occupies a unique place within the air-cooled 911 history. Combining the muscular styling and chassis enhancements of the 930 Turbo with the reliability and purity of the naturally aspirated Carrera, the M491 is widely regarded as one of the most desirable G-Series models. With long-term ownership, impressive originality, the sought-after G50 gearbox and recent mechanical preparation, this rare 1988 example represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a highly collectible air-cooled Porsche.
