Description

Few cars capture the spirit of 1980s motoring quite like the Renault 5. First introduced in 1972, the Renault 5 became one of Europe’s most successful small cars thanks to its practical design, economical running costs and unmistakable styling, with more than 5.5 million examples sold worldwide.

This 1988 four-door example has remained a Jersey car from new and covered a remarkably low 33,500 miles during its lifetime. Accompanying the vehicle is an extensive history file containing documentation accumulated over the years. Particularly noteworthy is the retention of the original sales invoice from Bagot Road Garage. The original Renault umbrella supplied with the vehicle when new has also been retained and remains with the car.

Finished in silver, the paintwork presents very well overall for a vehicle approaching four decades of age. As would be expected, there are a handful of age-related marks and imperfections, please see the accompanying photo gallery. However, the overall impression is of a well-cared-for and highly presentable classic.

The interior has survived exceptionally well and remains one of the highlights of the vehicle. The seats show very little sign of wear, consistent with the low mileage, while the dashboard, door cards and interior trim all present in notably good condition. The cabin offers a nostalgic reminder of late-1980s motoring and is both clean and remarkably original throughout.

Power comes from the dependable 1.4-litre petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox, making for relaxed and easy driving. The vendor reports that the car drives well and performs exactly as it should.

Increasingly difficult to find in such original and unspoilt condition, this Renault 5 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a charming and usable modern classic. With just 33,500 miles from new, documented Jersey ownership, an extensive history file, original purchase invoice and even its original Renault umbrella, it offers a level of provenance and originality seldom encountered today.
