Description
The GTI was first introduced in 1984, one year after the launch of the Peugeot 205, and was initially released with a lively 1.6-litre engine before being joined by the larger 1.9-litre version. Even today it remains a topic of debate amongst enthusiasts as to which version provides the purest driving experience. What is widely agreed, however, is that the 205 GTI established itself as one of the defining hot hatchbacks of the 1980s and early 1990s thanks to its lightweight design, engaging chassis and distinctive styling.
The exterior of this 1992 1.6-litre example presents very well overall. Finished in red, the car has benefited from a respray at some stage during its life which still shows well today, although there are some minor areas of overspray visible upon close inspection. The only notable blemishes are some light bubbling on the roof, which can be seen in the accompanying photo gallery. Otherwise, the bodywork appears solid and well preserved. The car has been garaged during the current owner’s tenure and is fitted with a sunroof. The silver “pepperpot” alloy wheels present well and were fitted with new tyres all round less than 500 miles ago.
Inside, the cabin is presented well overall and retains an original feel. As expected for a vehicle of this age, there are signs of age-related wear to the driver’s seat and steering wheel, though this only adds to the character of the car. The carpets and rear seats remain in good condition, and the interior presents as a tidy and usable space. An aftermarket stereo and upgraded speakers have also been fitted at some point during the car’s life.
Mechanically, the owner reports that the engine runs well. Maintenance carried out within the last 500 miles includes replacement of the cambelt and water pump. The clutch cable has also been replaced and the car has received a more recent oil service. The owner notes that the third-gear synchromesh may require attention in the future, as it can occasionally crunch if a fast gear change is attempted, although the car drives well when driven smoothly.
The boot floor shows some areas of surface rust which have been treated. A replacement boot floor panel is included in the sale should the next owner wish to carry out a more comprehensive repair.
Overall, this Jersey-supplied 205 GTI represents a well-presented example of one of the most celebrated hot hatchbacks of its era. With its engaging driving dynamics and enduring reputation among enthusiasts, the Peugeot 205 GTI remains a true icon and continues to offer a highly rewarding classic driving experience.
