Description
The 106 line made its debut in 1991 but it wasn’t until the phase two models arrived in 1996 that a GTi-badged model arrived. Folklore might place the Peugeot 205 GTi as the French brand’s crowning hot hatch achievement, but there’s a very strong case to be made for the smaller 106 GTi too.
The exterior of this 1998 GTi is in excellent condition; having received a full professional respray in 2020 and kept garaged since. The bumpers continue this theme, and the sunroof is fully operational and most importantly watertight, with no leaks. The care and effort that has been invested into this car is clear to see.
Completing the exterior appearance are 15-inch black alloy wheels and aftermarket headlights; both of which can be returned to the original items as these have been retained. The Maxxis tyres provide a significant amount of tread.
Moving inside, the black leather and suede seats are presented well, with only expected age related wear. The door panels, dashboard, carpets and over-mats are all incredibly well presented, as is the headlining. All electrical elements are in perfect working order. The steering wheel and stereo have been changed; however the original items will also accompany the sale of the car.
At the heart of this 106 GTi is a 1.6 litre 16 valve engine, which delivers a peak power figure of 120 bhp. With a kerb weight of just 950kg, it has a respectable power-to-weight ratio and delivers drive to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. Mechanically this Peugeot has been very well maintained. Its most recent service was completed in May 2024 in preparation for sale and this included a cam-belt change and new water pump. There are also further invoices detailing further maintenance which has been carried out over the past few years.
This Peugeot 106 GTI is a fantastic example of one of the nimblest hot hatches ever made. Benefiting from a full respray and in excellent mechanical order, it has been prepared to a very high standard regardless of cost. The 106 GTi remains a true lightweight performance icon, and this model stands ready to be enjoyed on the roads.
