Description
The second generation of the Cortina was launched in October 1966, four years after the well-engineered Mk1 had burst onto the scene but dated rather quickly. The new Mk2 Cortina was introduced with the slogan ‘New Cortina is more Cortina’, although at 14ft long, it was fractionally shorter than before. With various engine sizes and specifications available, the Mk2 was an instant success and helped Ford go on to achieve the title of ‘Britain’s most popular new car’ in 1967.
The exterior of this Cortina is presented in excellent condition. The body shell and all of the body panels are incredibly solid, clean, and most importantly rust free. The same can be said for the underneath of the car which is also very clean and well presented. This Mk2 retains its original colour saluki bronze metallic and has benefited from a full professional respray in 2017 which has been completed to an incredibly high standard. The chrome work which completes the outside appearance of the car is also in very good condition.
The original wheels have been upgraded to period 13” Rostyle wheels which look fantastic. All four tyres also retain a significant amount of tread.
Exploring the interior, the brown tan leatherette front seats and door cards offer a lovely contrast to the exterior colour. Although this Cortina is now over 50 years old the front and rear seats show no sign of significant age-related wear. The interior carpets and roof lining are also in very good condition. The steering wheel has been changed to a dished 3-spoke variation; however, the original wheel will be included in the sale along with a selection of other spares.
Under the bonnet is an 8-valve 1.6 litre engine mounted to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The engine runs perfectly and starts every time. It was fully overhauled including a new head gasket whilst the bodywork was resprayed in 2017. The engine bay continues the same theme as the rest of the car and is very well presented. The vendor reports there are no mechanical or electrical issues with the car.
This Ford Cortina Mk2 1600 Super is a very desirable and collectible saloon. Presented in excellent condition externally, underneath and inside, it’s a fantastic appreciating classic. With only 29,441 miles covered from new, it would make a stylish weekend cruiser or perfect addition to any collection of classics.
