Description
The original Ford Focus RS was launched in October 2002 and was produced for just over 12 months until November 2003. The idea was to capitalise on Fords involvement in the World Rally Championship and deliver a new icon worthy of the RS badge. To achieve this Ford completely re-worked the standard Focus, with just the roof, doors and bonnet being retained on the exterior and even more changed underneath! New parts included wide-track suspension, Quaife differential, AP racing brakes, Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes, OZ Racing wheels and the list continued. Ford invested so heavily in ensuring this car was a success that it’s reported each car was sold at a £4,000 loss, and in total, only 4,501 Focus RS Mk1’s were produced.
This example was built in August 2003 and as signified by the small, engraved plate in the cabin, is number 2561. Originally a UK car from new, it came across to Jersey in January 2006 where it has remained since. Under the bonnet sits a 2.0 litre Duratec engine which was bespoke for the Focus RS and combined with a Garrett turbocharger increased power to 212 bhp and a 0-60 time in under 6 seconds. Coupled to this is a five-speed manual gearbox which delivers drive to the front wheels. It’s covered 58,492 miles from new.
Offered only in Imperial Blue metallic, the paintwork on this RS is presented very well overall, a theme which continues across the exterior panels. As expected for a car now over 20 years old, there are some small blemishes however nothing of significance.
The 18-inch OZ racing wheels have been previously refurbished and finished in an anthracite grey, all 4-wheels remain in excellent condition with no scuffs or curbing. The Dunlop tyres all retain a significant amount of tread.
This Focus RS has received some minor modifications during previous ownership which includes an aftermarket exhaust system, small aesthetic touches in the engine bay and a stereo system. The standard radio and cover panel has been retained allowing it to be returned to standard form if preferred.
Moving inside, the Sparco black with blue striped leather and Alcantara seats look fantastic, and only show minor signs of age-related wear. The rear seats which carry the same colour theme are in excellent condition. The same can be said for the dash, door cards and carpets. All electronic items and instruments including the push button start and boost gauge are fully operational.
Mechanically, this Focus RS received its last full service in June 2024 in preparation for sale. Prior to this it also benefited from a new cambelt and water pump and has covered less than 1,000 miles since. The sale includes the original owner’s manual and service book.
The Ford Focus RS is a hot hatch reimagined with all the engineering might Ford could throw at it, and it doesn’t disappoint! This 2003 example is very well presented and would make a perfect addition to any collection of fast Fords or a weekend toy for any enthusiast.
